The Association was formed following the change in legislation to allow flying training of aircraft and gyro, helicopters from unlicensed aerodromes.
It was immediately obvious following discussions with a number of existing organisations and associations such as AOA/AOPA and Pooleys that a joint voice of those unlicensed aerodromes would carry more weight when issues arose that needed to be addressed, and the sharing of actions and recommendations to ensure that safety was maintained for all would be of joint benefit.
The CAA and other major industry player supported the setting up of an association to be run on behalf of the membership and this would be a route that would show government that a responsible approach to this alteration had been taken.
The Aim is clear:
“To ensure that “Safety is No Accident” and that the aerodrome operator and users of locations that are not licensed by the UK regulatory body( CAA) follow best practice and guidelines in order to be able to operate in as safe a manor as is reasonably practical.”

09.04.10 – Flying training from unlicensed aerodromes set to begin!
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced that flying training at unlicensed aerodromes will be allowed from Wednesday 14 April 2010. The change comes into force following the relevant amendments to the Air Navigation Order and the Rules of the Air Regulations by the Department for Transport. It will now be possible for fixed-wing aircraft up to 2,730kg Maximum Take-Off Mass (MTOM) and Helicopters and Gyroplanes up to 3,175kg MTOM to be used for flight training at unlicensed airfields. The CAA announced the intended change earlier this year.
